Here’s the truth: I am a spicy tuna roll lover through and through, but I almost never get to enjoy them because 1) my husband doesn’t like sushi and 2) finding sushi-grade tuna to make them at home is honestly really hard and expensive. So, if you’re in the same boat as me and want to satisfy your spicy tuna cravings without spending an arm and a leg…look no further!

These spicy tuna bites utilize canned tuna to make it extra quick, easy and affordable. The creamy, spicy mixture is then plopped onto a crispy sesame rice cracker along with some avocado for the perfect little bite! I developed this recipe with the intention of it being served as a fun and unique holiday appetizer, but it could work just as well as a healthy snack or girl dinner on the night’s you’re feeling lazy lol.

Plus, not only are they super tasty and satisfying, but they’re actually packed with protein, healthy fats and omega-3s. If you know or care at all about blood sugar balance, you’ll appreciate that these spicy tuna bites are a great appetizer to serve that won’t spike people’s blood sugar and cause all sorts of cravings afterward!

What You Need to Make these Spicy Canned Tuna Bites

For the Spicy Tuna:

  • Albacore Tuna: For these spicy tuna bites, we’re taking the easy and budget friendly route by using canned tuna instead of fresh sushi-grade tuna. You just need 2 cans (10oz total) of Wild Planet Albacore Tuna, drained & flaked. A great protein source!
  • Mayonnaise: This adds creaminess and richness to the spicy tuna bites. You can also try substituting full-fat plain greek yogurt or skyr if you prefer.
  • Green Onion: I typically just use the green parts for this, which adds a nice but subtle pop of flavor to these spicy tuna bites.
  • Sriracha: This Asian-style hot sauce is what puts the spicy in spicy tuna bites. Feel free to add more to taste, but I also like topping them with an extra drizzle of sriracha.
  • Tamari: Tamari is just gluten free soy sauce. You can totally substitute normal soy sauce if you’re not gluten free, or use coconut aminos for a slightly sweeter and less salty option.
  • Rice Vinegar: This adds a really nice acidic tang. In a pinch, you can substitute an equal amount of fresh lime juice.
  • Toasted Sesame Oil: A little goes a long way here! Don’t stress if you only have normal (un-toasted) sesame oil…that will work too!

For Serving:

  • Sesame Rice Crackers: To keep these spicy tuna bites gluten free, I like serving them on a little sesame rice cracker! They’re super light and crunchy for the most satisfying bite. You could do some crispy wonton cups if you’re not gluten free.
  • Avocado: Creamy avocado is the perfect pairing with spicy tuna, and it adds some more nutrients to this snack.
  • Sriracha: For an extra kick, finish each bite off with another drizzle of sriracha.
  • Green Onion: More chopped green onion…for the vibes!
  • Sesame Seeds: This is also mostly for looks, but adds a bit of flavor and crunch.

How To Make these Spicy Tuna Bites (with Canned Tuna)

Mix together the Spicy Tuna:

First, add all spicy tuna ingredients to a medium bowl and stir until combined. Taste and adjust the amount of sriracha and green onion, or feel free to add some salt if you think it needs it.

Assemble Spicy Tuna Bites:

Next, place a few small pieces of avocado onto each rice cracker. Then, top with a small spoonful (about 1 tbsp) of the spicy tuna mixture.

Garnish & Enjoy:

Finally, garnish each bite with a drizzle of sriracha, green onion & sesame seeds. Enjoy!

Why use Canned Tuna instead of Fresh?

Canned tuna is not only much cheaper than fresh, but it’s also easier to find. At least near me, finding high-quality sushi grade tuna can be tricky and expensive. Whereas, you can find Wild Planet albacore tuna at almost every grocery store. And spicy tuna bites made with canned tuna are just as nourishing and delicious as they would be if you used fresh tuna…just trust me!

Other Ways to Utilize this Spicy Tuna with Canned Tuna:

If you’re looking for an easy yet high-protein snack or appetizer, then these spicy tuna bites are for you! But, if you want to try something different or transform it into more of a full meal, here are a few ideas:

  • Rice Bowls: It’s like a poke bowl but with canned tuna! Prepare the spicy tuna mixture as instructed, then serve it with some white rice, cucumber, edamame, etc. Such an easy yet balanced meal.
  • On Toast or in a Sandwich: Use it wherever you would normal tuna salad. I prefer an open-faced style sandwich with some toasted bread and arugula, but you do you!
  • In Crispy Wonton Cups: If you’re not gluten free, it would be super fun to serve these in little crispy wonton cups for an equally satisfying appetizer or snack recipe.

How Should I Store Leftover Spicy Tuna Bites?

If you have leftovers of the spicy tuna mixture, I recommend storing it in airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Store the avocado, rice crackers and toppings separately and assemble the bites when you’re ready to eat.
