This Paleo Apple Crisp for Two is perfect for anyone who is craving all the cozy, delicious flavor of Apple Crisp but doesn’t want a ton of leftovers! It smells just as good as it tastes, too!

Paleo Apple Crisp for Two

There is something so nostalgic about apple crisp. I remember helping my mom make apple crisp every year with the insane amount of apples we picked from the orchard. One of my jobs was to peel the apples; I tried to peel each apple in one go, but almost always failed. Anyways, this Paleo Apple Crisp for Two only requires you to peel 2 apples, so it’s easy and makes just the right amount for you to share with your partner, bestie, or family member.

Why You’ll Love this Paleo Apple Crisp for Two

  • It tastes just like a classic apple crisp but is paleo, gluten free, grain free and refined sugar free.
  • You won’t have a crazy amount of leftovers!
  • The crumble topping is loaded with healthy fats and just slightly sweetened with coconut sugar.
  • Paleo Apple Crisp tastes and smells like a Fall heaven.
  • It’s the perfect recipe to use up some of your apples from apple picking!
  • There is very little active time in this recipe — just pop it in the oven and let it do it’s thing.

What Makes this Apple Crisp Paleo?

This is a Paleo Apple Crisp because it doesn’t utilize any grains (oats), refined sugar or traditional butter. Instead, the crumble is a mixture of of almond flour, chopped nuts, coconut & ghee (contains dairy but is paleo friendly).

Although I’m not paleo, I love making my recipes accessible to people with certain dietary preferences or intolerances. Rest assured, even if you’re not paleo, you will love this recipe too! I swear it tastes just like the apple crisp you grew up eating.

As a note, the vanilla ice cream that I served this with is NOT paleo. So, if you’re strictly paleo, make sure to omit it or substitute for a paleo-friendly ice cream. I think there are plenty of recipes for paleo ice creams out there on the internet.

What You Need to Make Paleo Apple Crisp for Two

  • Apples: I think that’s pretty self-explanatory…
  • Cinnamon: The quintessential fall spice — included in both the apple mixture and the crumble topping!
  • Arrowroot Starch: A gluten/grain free starch that will help thicken the apple mixture and give it the best gooey texture! You could also substitute tapioca flour or cornstarch (not paleo).
  • Lemon Juice: No need to even measure here…just a small squeeze in the apple mixture will do!
  • Almond Flour: I know almond flour can be kind of pricey, which is why I always suggest buying it in bulk on Amazon.
  • Chopped Nuts: Feel free to use whatever kind you have on hand! I used a mix of cashews and walnuts, but almonds, pecans or practically any other nut would work. I recommend raw nuts, so they don’t get too crunchy in the oven.
  • Unsweetened Shredded Coconut: Gives a great texture and flavor to the crumble.
  • Coconut Sugar: Only 2 tbsp in this whole recipe!
  • Ghee: Ghee imparts such a buttery flavor to the crumble. Make sure that it’s cold (not melted) when you add it. To make this recipe dairy free, substitute vegan butter or solid coconut oil.

What Should I Bake This In?

I made this Paleo Apple Crisp for Two in a 5″ x 5″ square Le Crueset baking pan. It was *almost* too small, but ended up being the perfect size when I pressed the apples down slightly. If you have a large ramekin style bowl that’s oven-safe, you could also use that! Another option is a small glass, pyrex bowl. In the end, it doesn’t really matter what vessel you use to bake it in. Just keep in mind that the larger the pan, the more spread out the apple mixture will be and therefore, the thinner the crumble layer will be. Will definitely be delicious no matter what, though!
