Foolproof Jammy Eggs

WHAT'S SPECIAL

Ooey, gooey yolks guaranteed. Add them to your breakfast, lunch or meal-prep.

Jammy Eggs are the absolute BEST way to eat eggs, in my opinion. Nothing is more satisfying than cutting them open and the yolk oozing out onto your avocado toast or breakfast bowl. But, it can be tricky to get them right, so this post is a foolproof way to achieve that perfect jammy yolk and cooked white every single time!

Foolproof Jammy Eggs

As a kid I wouldn’t touch a jammy egg with a 10 foot pole. I didn’t even like yolks in general! Fast forward to now and my taste in eggs has completely changed. It’s runny yolks or bust for me, honestly. I just love how it adds a natural “sauce” to any breakfast dish.

These Foolproof Jammy Eggs can also be meal-prepped ahead of time. When you’re ready to eat them, just peel and enjoy! The yolk will still be super gooey and jammy as if you had just made it fresh. I’ve been prepping a bunch of them on Sundays to enjoy throughout the work as a great protein & fat source.

What You Need To Make These Foolproof Jammy Eggs

Does it get any easier than this!?

  • Eggs: The fresher the better! I always choose pasture-raised, which you can get for a great price at Trader Joe’s.
  • Water: You will need water for boiling the eggs as well as for an ice bath that will stop the eggs from overcooking.
  • Ice: For the ice water bath mentioned above.

So, How Do You Make Foolproof Jammy Eggs?

Making Foolproof Jammy Eggs is actually very simple and quick. Start by adding a few inches of water to a pot or pan. You don’t need much water, in fact it doesn’t even need to cover the eggs all the way. Bring the water to a boil over medium hot.

Once it starts boiling, gently add in your eggs using a slotted spoon or your hands. The shells are fragile and can easily crack, so be careful. Place a lid over the pan and promptly set a timer for 6 minutes. Timing is everything here and can be the difference between a perfect jammy egg and a medium or hard-boiled egg.

While the eggs are cooking, prepare an ice water bath by adding water and ice to a large bowl. When the timer goes off, immediately remove the pan from the burner. Then use your slotted spoon to transfer the eggs into the ice water bath. Let the eggs rest in the ice water bath until they are cool enough to touch, which should only take a few minutes.

From here you have two options: peel the eggs if you are eating right away or keep the shells on them and store in the fridge if you are making them as a part of your meal-prep. They are delicious either way! If you choose the meal-prep option, the eggs will firm up just a touch in the fridge but will still be gooey and amazing.

What Should you Serve Them With?

The real question is what SHOULDN’T you serve Foolproof Jammy Eggs with?! They are the perfect addition to practically any meal.

  • Avocado Toast: Grab your favorite bread (mine is Canyon Bakehouse GF), toast it up, smash some avocado, add some seasonings (fresh dill, salt, pepper + red pepper flakes are a must) and slice open your Jammy Eggs on top!
  • Breakfast Bowls: The Jammy Eggs go perfectly with a hearty, veggie-packed breakfast bowl. I like to fill mine with arugula, sweet potato, radishes, pickled red onion, and of course the Jammy Eggs.
  • Salads: Jammy Eggs are just as good at breakfast time as they are on a salad for lunch or dinner.
  • On Their Own: I often find myself reaching into the fridge to grab a meal-prepped Jammy Egg. It’s a good protein & fat-filled snack.
